Investigators have identified the 30-year-old single mother of two from Germantown as the pedestrian who was fatally struck crossing Great Seneca Highway near Kentlands Boulevard on Monday night.
Police say that Amaya was walking shortly after 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 7 when she was struck by a Honda Civic not far from Orchard Ridge Road.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, now the community is rallying around her family.
"Yesterday my friend Dinora left work and I can no longer get to her house where her little children are still waiting for her," one of her co-workers posted online along with a link to a fundraiser for the family.
"Today I want to ask you in the nicest way for your help in this difficult case for your family and where besides comfort and strength you need financial resources."
Amaya was described as "a person full of life, and a single mother dedicated to her two children" by Edwin Amaya.
"For this reason, we have decided to create this campaign to raise funds that will allow us to say a dignified goodbye and honor his memory."
Those interested in contributing to the family's cause can do so here.
